Huge Longshot Gamble Pays Off

The relevance of my recent email on Longshots was confirmed when a punter on Betfair, Chris Stickler, turned £3 into £73,000 on one multiples bet on 9th January.

Such vast profits are only achievable on the exchanges as the odds are often so much higher.

The bet involved one fivefold, five fourfolds, and ten trebles at a cost of £3.09.

The first horse to win was Lights Of Broadway at BF SP of 770.0 (the bookies price just 201.0)

Three of the five horses selected also went on to win, Lastkingofscotland, Aviso and Sommersturm to give a combined total of £73,099

The win was not a complete fluke as Chris considered trainers, comments on Timeform radio and the weights carried.

The longshot winner is an elusive beast, especially in horse racing but that need not deter us from trying to pin them down.

They may be hiding but they sure are there as the daily racing results reveal - day after day.

Only the other day I noticed a hurdles winner that traded on Betfair at 1000.

"Did you listen to the interview yet, I hope you found it useful, you probably noticed we had a lot of fun recording it.

I love running the Puntology course because I know that at the end of it I will have changed some lives for the better.

Last time we ran it in the final lesson we asked participants to score us out of 5 the average score was a very pleasing 4.41 and we had a lot of 5's.

I've spent the last few months updating the lessons and creating new bonus items that fit in with what I'm teaching and I'm really proud of the finished product.

Of course however much work I put in I know there will still be lots of questions along the way.

I dont mind the questions at all, in fact a lot of my best ideas come from questions asked :-)

When it gets tricky is when I get a handful of questions about lesson 1 and then some about lesson 13 and some about another lesson along the way.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's easier for me if we all work through together that way I know the questions are in context of the lesson I just released.

That's the reason why I am only opening the doors for a few days. That way if we have to have any group discussions along the way or if I have to create any new material to clarify something we'll all be together.

So tomorrow at 12:00 BST I will be opening the doors and then on Monday 24th I'll put up the sold out sign and we can concentrate on the lessons and looking after everybody that took the plunge.

Something interesting landed in my inbox the other day which I thought I would share with you.

It's an automated ratings tool for UK horse races from Puntology - I watched the instruction video and was impressed how easy it was to copy the basic data from the online Racing Post and paste it into the spreadsheet they provide.

The ratings for the race are then calculated - in the example shown the selection went on to win (which of course you would expect in a promotional video)

Horse Racing Scene

This weekend has a wonderful feast of top class action which kicks off on Saturday with cards from Ascot, featuring three Group races, Newmarket, Redcar, Fontwell, Wolverhampton, and day one from the Arc meeting over in France at Longchamp.

At Ascot Genki looks to have a strong chance of getting back into the winners enclosure in the John Guest Bengough Stakes (15.15 pm) after finishing a close up 4th in the Group 1 Betfred Sprint at Haydock.

On the same card Hughie Morrison's Pastoral Player has been performing with credit all season and the couple of pounds that the handicapper has dropped him after his staying on 5th in the Ayr Gold Cup last time out makes him an appealing each-way fancy for the ToteScoop6 Challenge Cup due of at 15.50.

On Sunday the feature event is the Group 1 Prix De L´Arc De Triomphe (15.15 pm) which carries a winner's prize of £1,970,345. The drying ground has been a concern for many of the leading contenders and a number of high profile entries such as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes hero Nathaniel will not be lining up for this prestigious event.

Of those that are due to compete there has been growing confidence that Ed Dunlop's 4yo filly Snow Fairy can run a big race. A proven performer at Group 1 level and with a great turn of foot she would seem to represent decent each-way value at current odds of around 12/1.

Value Football Selections

Last week's picks had one of those flat spots which can happen when you follow a value based approach. Scunthorpe did the business winning 2-1 against Yeovil, but we were a goal shy with the Overs prediction in the Notts County v Rochdale game, whilst the MK Dons and Bury played out a surprising 0-0 bore draw.

Overall there was not too much damage done with a small loss of just over a point, onwards and upwards as they say.

For the coming weekend our Betting Insiders author pro-punter/trader Kevin Laverick has suggested the following value based selections:-

Sat (15.00) Exeter v Oldham - Over 2.5 goals (6/5 Coral)

Exeter have had a rough start to the campaign and lie next to bottom but they have already played 7 of the top 8. Their form is better than their league position shows and against mid-table Oldham I expect them to get their shooting boots on.

Oldham themselves have gone Over in 4 of their 5 away games and are averaging 3.4 goals in their away games, so I think we have some decent value here.

Sat (15.00) Barnet v Northampton - Over 2.5 goals (8/9 188Bet)

Barnet do keep popping up with good results, even though down towards the bottom of the league. Away wins at Colchester and Morecambe, should give them hope here.

Northampton have scored in all their away games this season and 4 out of 5 have gone Over. I do expect both teams to score and help our Overs chances in the process.

Sat (15.00) Burton v Bradford - Over 2.5 goals (9/10 188Bet)

Burton have scored in all 10 of their league games and Bradford have scored in 8 out of their 10, so you would hope that they can keep that run going and give us a great chance of winning the Overs bet here.

Weekend Tips With Paddock Tweets

Tony Ward has just sent me his tips for the day which are posted here

Your readers may (or may not) be interested in the fact that I will be at Redcar this evening tweeting my paddock observations and tips from the pre-parade and parade rings.

the way it works is that I send out a tweet naming all of the horses that i think look fit for the race when I have looked at the in the pre-parade ring. I then take a closer look at the horses I like in the parade ring and factor in aspects such as form in the ground and over the distance etc. I then send a second tweet with my final shortlist of two to three horses.

At Catterick on Wednesday I highlighted 4 winners in this way at 5/6, 5/1, 5/2 and 12/1. Four placed horses at 9/2, 9/4, 15/2 and 11/1.

At Carlisle on Thursday I had three winners at 33/1 - unraced 2yo in the first - 7/1 and 6/1. Five placed horses at 4/1, 20/1, 12/1, 8/1, 15/2.

I'm currently reviewing a bettting bot running on the Betfair API which looks very promising so far. You can trial it using a simulator function which gives results without actually staking but I'm using it with very small stakes to get the live feel for it.

There are several different applications eg Football, Greyhounds, Tennis but I am enjoying most success with the laying horse favourites bot.

With all the racing that was going on yesterday it was significant that Dettori was at the third most valuable meeting of the day at Newmarket. The fact he went there to ride DISCOURSE speaks volumes and the way this filly won suggests she's a Group 1 winner in the making. She was able to get a good position in behind the strong leader and then when asked she lengthened gracefully, rather than powerfully, to put 5L between her and her rivals. Well on top at the finish if Dettori had have really gone after her you'd be looking at 10L+. The obvious race that springs to mind is the Fillies' Mile, the trip looks ideal for her already, at Ascot and she'll take the beating there but also got to think she's a natural Oaks contender for next year already.

Morache Music P.Makiin

A winner off a mark of 91 MRACHE MUSIC is probably in line for a 6lb/7lb rise as he was well on top at the finish of a very competitive 6f contest. Still only his second run of the season this fella appreciated the ground but would ideally prefer it even softer and there'll be a load of backend targets here and abroad for him to be aimed at. He needs a stiffish 6f to be seen at his best but he's also get 7f too. In the back of my mind I'm thinking if the ground comes up soft at Ayr he'd be the ideal type for the Ayr Gold Cup despite having rating of 97 or 98 by the time of the race. The strong pace and likely soft ground will be an ideal combination and should he win/go well there a step up into Pattern company looks the logical progression and it wouldn't surprise me to see him a Group winner by the end of the season.

Last Saturday the Mick Easterby trained Hoof It turned the usually competitive Stewards Cup handicap into something of a procession and will surely be capable of going on to achieve Group level success. Connections have indicated that he may be supplemented for the Nunthorpe Stakes which forms part of the 4 day festival meeting at York that is being held the week after next.

We trust that many of you took note of the Trainers highlighted to follow in last week's news bulletin, as since then Sir Mark Prescott has had an amazing 5 winners from just 6 runners including Tenby Lady who managed a further two victories the second of which at 4/1.

The other trainer mentioned was Donald McCain was even more profitable in landing 3 winners from his 6 runners which included the 20/1 shot Seedless who paid 29.10 on the Betfair SP which we suggested as the preferred staking option.

On this evidence it seems very appropriate to continue following their runners for the coming week or so and having reviewed the overall results we have started using a 70% place and 30% win staking plan using the Betfair SP facility.

This weekend Ascot holds the Shergar Cup meeting which features a competition between jockeys from different countries and in the main will be riding their mounts for the very first time. As such it may make an interesting spectator event but can be a minefield for punting purposes and we will be staying well clear of it.

Over at Haydock the Epsom Derby winning jockey Mickael Barzalona is due to ride in three races and given his impressive strike-rate when riding in this country it may be worth taking a closer look at his intended mounts.

In the second race due off at 2.15pm he is due to ride the Godolphin owned Burj Nahar who last ran at Ascot a couple of weeks ago when the fast ground and lack of pace didn't help his cause. With the going at Haydock looking likely to be on the soft side of good the horse may have conditions to resume winning ways.

In the following race (2.45pm) Simon De Montfort will be having his first run since a poor display in March in which he finished plum last. In the hope that connections have sorted out whatever was remiss at that time he is given a tentative nod that there perseverance will be rewarded with a solid display.

Barzalona's 3rd intended ride is a really interesting one as it is for veteran trainer Reg Hollinshead in a lowly Class 5 handicap due off at 5.00pm. It is difficult to fathom why he has the leg up on Mount Hollow given the prize money on offer but as long as the bookmakers don't over react in shortening up the price maybe a leap of faith will be rewarded.

A Tiger Lost In The Backwoods

I love the Betfan preamble for their free newsletters as you get to learn some exotic news concerning celebrities. Here's the latest concerning Tiger Woods:

Their spat is an amusing sideshow to this week though it would be hilarious if Woods was paired with Adam Scott who has appointed Tigers ex best mate as his caddy. I suspect Woods will miss the cut and of course play the injury card in interviews- if he bothers to give any!

The Europeans aren't coming anymore, they're already here and are led by twitterholic, newly single Rory Mcilroy. He will relish being back in America after spitting his dummy out over the windy conditions in Britain and Ireland recently. He certainly has the American Media and players worried and may well use that to his advantage, I hear rumours that Tiger thinks Rory is getting a little bit too cocky, so never mind putting Woods with Adam Scott lets have Rory and Tiger paired together. St Leger - Ante Post Advice

It is very interesting BLUE BUNTING is being talked of as going for the St Leger as her Irish Oaks win showed she has stamina in abundance. The fact she only collared her rivals late on suggests the 1m6 1/2f trip at Doncaster will be ideal and it is a race Godolphin have targeted in the past. Lets not forget she is the only genuine Group 1 horse in the race barring the favourite and as such the 10-1 is a huge price.

RELIABLE MAN disappointed when finishing third in the Grand Prix de Paris but there is reason to believe that wasn't his true running. His impressive turn of foot he showed in the French Derby wasn't in evidence but he didn't get any cover whatsoever and having watched the race again I'm not sure the ground was soft enough. If back to the level he showed in the French Derby he'll run a big race and his trainer is a past master at getting 3yos ready to win it. He'll certainly get cover and the pace should allow him to settle and the ground is odds-on to be softer than it was for the Grand Prix de Paris. 20-1 is a fair price and if he wins his prep race he's bound to be much shorter and hence we'll be in a good position.

Something For The Weekend

F1 - German Grand Prix

The Formula 1 road show moves on to the German Grand Prix which is due to be held at the Nurburgring track over this weekend, and as was the case two weeks ago at the British race the weather may have a major bearing on the outcome.

Germany has this week been hit by spectacular storms bringing flash floods and that trend looks set to continue into the weekend, bringing an element of uncertainty to proceedings.

The bookmakers have reacted to the outcome of the last event, for which we suggested that championship leader Sebastian Vettel was opposable at the 4/5 price on offer, by pushing him out to odds against (11/10) for this weekend's race.

Fernando Alonso is the clear 3/1 second favourite in the pre-practice outright winner markets after claiming a comfortable win in the British race after a much-improved performance from his Ferrari.

The technical regulations have been "tweaked" yet again and the upshot would appear to swing things back to the Red Bull teams favour, with this in mind we are going to stick with Mark Webber to give us another run for our money after returning a small profit on the British event where he finished on the podium.

The value bet would appear to be 7/1 with Sporting bet in the win only market or alternatively you can place an each-way option at around the 11/2 mark with Bodog which returns a small profit should he land a place on the podium.

Copa America

The 2011 Copa America football tournament has been played through the last few weeks and the final will surprisingly not include defending champions Brazil nor the host nation Argentina who were both knocked out in the earlier rounds.

Instead Uruguay will take on Paraguay in Sunday's final due to kick off at 8pm and Uruguay are the even money favourites to win their 15th Copa America title and become the biggest winner of the tournament, ahead of Argentina with 14 trophies.

Paraguay have proven to be a stubborn team to beat and will more than likely try to keep things tight however, should there be an early goal for either team the match will have to open up and therefore a speculative punt on the over 2.50 goals at around the 7/4 mark would seem to be the call.

Horse Racing Scene

The top class equine action on Saturday (23rd) includes meetings at Ascot, York, Newmarket, Newcastle, Salisbury and Lingfield, with the feature event being the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes due off at 16.30 from a 7 race card at Ascot.

The race is steeped in history and this year's renewal is worth over £600,000 to the winner so it is disappointing to see only five due to go to post for such a prestigious event.

The market is currently headed by Workforce whose most recent run was to finish a close up 2nd behind the Aiden O'Brien trained So You Think in the 10f Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. The Ballydoyle team are represented by St Nicholas Abbey who looked a potential star when winning the Racing Post Trophy as a two-year-old and is finally starting to show that spark again as a 4yo.

Rewilding's defeat of So You Think over a mile and a quarter in the Prince of Wales's Stakes last month confirmed he's a top-class colt and the step back up to a mile and a half can only be in his favour, however he had a very hard race and may need longer to recover.

Workforce disappointed in the race last year and at the likely short odds the fast improving 3yo Nathaniel could well have more to give and at 7/1 could offer some each-way value.

One trainer to keep an eye on during the coming week is Sir Mark Prescott who has saddled 6 winners and a further 5 placed horses during the last 14 days from only 18 runners, giving a 61% place strike rate.

One suggested way to potentially profit from his runners is to back them with 20% of the stake in the win market and 80% in the place market with one of the betting exchanges such as Betfair.

Rebekah Brooks - A Tidbit

Howard Davis emailed today with some interesting facts concerning Rebekah Brooks and other assorted celebrities which you may find interesting.

Well the big news story over the last couple of weeks not just from the sports angle but on the world stage has been the phone hacking by the News of the World. As we all know the editor of the Sun and News of the World is Rebekah Brooks but what most people don't know is that her husband is former racehorse trainer and old Estonian Charlie Brooks.

Charlie rode as amateur for the great Fred Winter when champion John Francome was the stables jockey. He formed a relationship with Francomes ex wife Miriam who at the time worked as a TV presenter. It is alleged that when Francome found out about their relationship he packed all her clothes into a suitcase took it round to Charlie's yard and set it on fire. After Charlie and Miriam went their separate ways he was introduced to Rebekah and they now live in London in a penthouse overlooking the Thames. Charlie gave up training horses a few years ago and now works as a journalist for the Telegraph and author. You may have read his auto biography called crossing the line which deals with the less salubrious practices of the racing industry. The controversy that his book initiated proved a suitable launch pad for his first novel citizen which unsurprisingly is set in the world of racing and I have to add is a jolly good read.

I would like to congratulate Darren Clarke for his win in the Open Golf Championship as it could not have happened to a nicer guy but I must take issue with golf's ruling body on one particular point.

In 2011 I feel that it is outrageous that women are denied membership to certain golf clubs such as Royal St Georges and St Andrews to name but two. In fact it wasn't that long ago the Kent club had a sign in the car park saying no dogs & no women. I believe major tournaments should only be allotted to clubs that allow women members.

The R & A that run golf might have forgotten that in the winter of 1563 Mary Queen of Scots was one of the first people seen to be playing golf on the Royal Burgh at St Andrews. Come on golf join the 21st century!

The weather has not been too kind of late but cricket is going to be in for an Indian Summer now the Indian test team have arrived. I would not like to bet on the outcome against England but we will see some great games.

Talking of excellent cricket I was at hove last week to see Sussex beat Surrey in the T20 and what an innings by the home teams Murray Goodwin 100 not out. During his stint at the crease he suffered an asthma attack and an injured foot but carried his bat throughout the innings. I could never see the likes of Wayne Rooney or Didier Drogba doing that on the football field.

T20 now moves on to the quarter finals with some super games on the horizon in August and for those that fancy a good punt I think that Leicestershire to beat Kent at 4/5 is a cracking bet. Master tipsters have been in great form this summer with their cricket predictions and will be putting up some juicy multiples on Quarter Final weekend.

In the Totepool Handicap today at Ascot 2.30pm Ritual is likely to be all the rage but this is a big step up in class and I believe the value lies elsewhere. Cue our horse to follow Courageous who has been running well in this company and performed creditably here over 7f at the Royal Ascot meeting last month. At Betfair's current 18.10 he rates a decent bet for a place.

Our winning streak at TipsterPoint came to an end last night in the last race at Newbury. But 52 winning bets on the trot is no mean feat and still leaves us with a profit since the 15th June of 41.98 points. Selections are posted by 1.0pm as price movements are taken into consideration.
